Now here’s how it all began. My step-daughter and her husband are health fanatics. Although they both are professionals who work full schedules, they somehow manage to find time to maintain a regular fitness routine, working out nearly every day. They also follow strict health diets and indulge in regular endurance exercises. I admire them for all this. However, I am not as eager to get involved in it; I think one of the privileges of seniority is watching the younger folk do the physical exercise. So when they invited my wife and I over to see their newly refurbished home I had no idea what to expect.
You see, they had decided that they wanted to have workout facilities at home for days when they weren’t able to get to the gym, or when the weather wasn’t conducive to an outdoor workout. So they refurbished their son’s room after he left for the Army and turned it into a workout center. It was fitted with exercise equipment like stationary cycles, treadmills, and workout machines. I’ve seen gyms that had less than they put in that room. They gave us a key and told us we were welcome to use it whenever we liked. I thanked them and put mine on my key ring next to my lighter. But my wife decided this was just what she wanted. And since they were on their way to some work conference, she promptly volunteered to work out regularly while keeping the place running.
So that is how we ended up spending every morning of the next two weeks walking on the treadmill and working out on the exercise machine. My wife enjoyed it; I was so stiff and sore that I had trouble getting in and out of the bathtub each evening. Fortunately, the athletic shoes I’d gotten from Merrell protected me from developing major blisters on my tender feet. I got them for a steal; a Groupon coupon made it possible to buy the shoes for 30% off during the Merrell Labor Day sale. They are useful when I want to indulge in other activities; I am taking my wife somewhere to enjoy a relaxing Labor Day weekend– with as little walking or working out as possible – that is going to be our well-earned holiday break!
